A cute card for a dreary winter afternoon…

Today is a very snowy day up here in New Hampshire.  It is a great day for a hot cup of tea and a fun card to do.  But it never fails that I have a little bit of time to play with paper (as my son calls my cardmaking hobby) and zero inspiration.  I almost have too much to choose from – and that is a very real problem for so many of us.

So, it occurred to me that I should confine myself to a single piece of paper and see what I could come up with.  And that is when it occurred to me to do a little bit of Origami – perhaps a Dahlia fold card!

If you are looking for a quick and very cute project, consider doing this one!  If you are trying to entertain kids on a snowy afternoon, this card might work too.  Kids love to participate in a hobby that their mom or Nana loves to do!

Here is how this works:  look for a single piece of Stampin’ Up! Designer Series Paper.  I think that the smaller the formatting of the design, the better.  My choice was the new Abstract Beauty DSP.  This paper has a number of small format floral designs – and offers a number of great options.

Using a 1-3/4” circle punch (now retired), I punched 8 circles.  (The Stampin’ Up! Layering Circles Dies work well, too.)

The folding is easy, and I am thinking that this might be one of those to-do projects that I keep in front of the TV to do.  It is repetitive but contributes to a very cute card background! A great project while on a binge.

I decided to try a gallery of steps to show you how to create each petal:

The full flower needs 8 petals.  Once they have been folded, I mounted them on a 2” circle and used a Stampin’ Up! Gold Glitter Enamel Dot for the flower’s center.

The rest of the card was a very quick assembly with the following cardstock pieces:

PcsMeasurementsDescription
Stampin’ Up Night of Navy cardstock14-1/4” x 11”Scored on the long side at 5-1/2”
Stampin’ Up! Polished Pink cardstock14” x 5-1/4”For mat on card face.
Basic White Cardstock14” x 5-1/4”Inner panel for message.
Basic White Cardstock13-3/4” x 5”This is the panel for stamping and embossing.

After stamping the smallest Basic White cardstock panel with the “hello” greeting from the Stampin’ Up! Biggest Wish in Night of Navy, I embossed the panel with the Ornate Floral 3D embossing folder.  It was ready to be assembled.

As I was getting ready to mount the inside panel to the card, I decided that it needed just a little something – and so, I cut a ½” strip from the Abstract Beauty DSP that I had used and lined the bottom with it.

And that is it!  These are such cute little cards that would send a happy hello to someone – especially on a dreary winter day.

Thanks so much for stopping in to see my post today!  If I can help you in any way, please let me know.  I would be delighted to be your Stampin’ Up! demonstrator – if you need one.  But I am also very happy to help you create a delightful card as your creative partner as well!!

Thanks so much, Amy! Isn’t this a fun, quick project that uses supplies on hand? I was thinking about how much fun it would be to do with kids, too!

      Thanks for stopping in, Mary!

I found very very old posts of this folding technique – 2009, 2013 – and I thought that it would be fun to use current papers to recreate it. And THEN Connie Stewart released a video tutorial a couple of days after I posted this one. Here I was thinking that I’m all unique and stuff!!

But it’s a cute flower – and kind of addictive. I keep punching sets of 8 circles and folding them while I’m watching TV – or sitting at Zoom meetings. (Don’t tell…) Once you’ve done it a couple of times, you can do it almost automatically. It’s a good thing to do instead of playing games on the phone app too! PLUS you can make up some really cute cards after!

Thanks so much for stopping in to take a look!
