How about a Shaker Valentine with some Country Floral?

I have been on a roll with the Valentine’s theme!  And today is no different!

I have been wanting to make a shaker card for a while – and what would delight your Valentine more than a pretty Shaker card telling them how wonderful they are?

Even if you have never made a Shaker card before, I think my hints and tricks might make it easier than you think – and it is such a fun Fancy Fold type of card.  Here are the cutting instructions:

 #MeasurementsNotes
Stampin’ Up! Blushing Bride Card Stock15-1/2” x 8-1/2”Scored along the long side at 4-1/4”.
Stampin’ Up! Heart Pattern from the Country Floral Lane DSP Pack14” x 5-1/4”Outside mat.
Stampin’ Up! Basic White Card Stock14” x 5-1/4”Inside mat.
Stampin’ Up! Real Red card stock13” x 4-3/4”This piece will line the shaker compartment to provide a contrasting color.
Stampin’ Up! Real Red Card StockScraps These scraps will provide the banner on the front panel as well as the scalloped heart frame around the shaker compartment.
Stampin’ Up! Heart Pattern from the Country Floral Lane DSP17/8” x 4”This is the decoration for the inside panel of the card.
Stampin’ Up! Window Sheet13” x 5”This is the window panel for the shaker compartments.

Once the pieces are cut, the front panel is the most important part of the card design.

I made a small mark at the center top of the Heart Patterned DSP to help me punch the original hearts.  I used the plain heart punch from the Stampin’ Up! Heart Punch Pack to do this.

I lined the punch up so that the upper left corner of the punch was aligned with the penciled center mark and tilted the punch toward the right.  This angle created the right-side heart.  And I repeated it to create the heart on the left.

The next step is to create scalloped heart frames for the hearts.  I used Real Red card stock to do this.

I first punched a plain heart in the Real Red card.  Then I centered the punched design in the scalloped heart punch from the Heart Punch Pack.  You need to eye-ball this and maybe do a practice punch or two.

Glue the scalloped heart frames onto the Heart patterned Country Floral DSP.

Flip the cardstock over and adhere the Window Sheet to the back of the DSP panel.

The next step is more tedious than difficult.  Using the Stampin’ Up! Adhesive Strip, I first colored one of the sides with a Real Red Stampin’ Blend so that it would “disappear” when the shaker is assembled.  Is this a necessary step?  Probably not – but I did not like seeing a little bit of the white foam tape in my first version of this card.

Work the tape around the opening of the two hearts like this:

I placed other foam tape on this panel to prepare it to adhere to the card base as you can see above.

TIP:        Many tutorials for shaker cards suggest that you place the shaker bits into the compartment and then adhere the card base on top of the panel.  Needless to say, the correct placement is very difficult since you are essentially working blind.

Fill each of the heart “compartments” with the pink selection from the Stampin’ Up! For Everything Fancy sequins set.  These are a beautiful mix of pink, white, and gold sequins of various sizes and shapes.  They are perfect for the shaker card!

Instead, I prefer to place the Real Red 3” x 4-3/4” on top of the shaker compartments because you can see all of the edges easily.  I placed more Tear & Tape on this Real Red panel, which was now ready to be mounted on the Blushing Bride card base.

Stamp the “Be my Valentine” sentiment from the Stampin’ Up! Share a Milkshake stamp set and cut the strip to measure between ¾” to 1”.  Use a strip of Real Red card stock to create a strip that is ¼” wider than the Basic White sentiment strip.

I used the Lovely Labels Pick a Punch to create the decorative edge on each of the strips.  I use the punch upside down so that I can center each strip.  Once punched, tape the sentiment strip to the Real Red strip and then adhere the completed sentiment to the top of the card.

Adhere the completed Shaker panel to the Blushing Bride card base.

The inside Basic White panel was decorated with the strip from the Heart Pattern of the Country Floral DSP along the side.  I used a sentiment from the Stampin’ Up! Celebrating You stamp set, using Real Red ink.  Adhere the panel to the inside of the card – and you are done!

I have entered this card into 2 challenges.  Just Us Girls – Word Week #662 wants designs with hearts – and this one certainly features those!

And the Color Hues – The Color Challenge #56 for Pink and Red designs is looking for those two colors featured in the design..

I hope that you give the Shaker Card design a try!  These fun cards are pretty easy – but they always delight the recipient!
