A Flying Seagull Card Swooping in for a Cup of Tea!

When I saw this design on Susan Campfield’s website, I was in love!  I have played around with this Flying Seagull design – at first because of the name and my love for all things beachy.  But then because of the way this beautiful design swoops into the recipient’s hands with a fabulous presence!

I decided that this would be my contribution as a Guest Designer for the Creative Creases Challenge #55. Debbie Mageed has been so gracious with her invitation to offer some of my designs – and I am delighted to swoop in with this Flying Seagull!

There are a couple of tricky bits to this card – or at least tricky until you see where the directions will take you.  Then it is very intuitive and will make you wonder why you didn’t think of it!

Here are the card cuts.  Because there are quite a few pieces, I decided to try having a “Reference” line for each cut to help with the piecing later on:

1. Cut, score, and fold the Petal Pink card stock base from line A above.

2. Flip one of the card base pieces over so that the folds of the 2” flaps touch.  These flaps will be joined using the Petal Pink 4-1/4” x 4-1/4” square from line B above. (The picture below shows the back of the card.)

3. Using glue or Tear and Tape, adhere the Petal Pink square first on one flap, aligning the top and bottom of the card stock pieces.  Then apply the tape or glue and adhere the other side to the other half of the card base.

4. Adhere the Tea Boutique DSP panels from line F above to the Smoky Slate mats from line D. Then adhere each of these to the outside flaps of the card.

5. Using the Smoky Slate panels from line E and dry emboss using the Stampin’ Up! Cane Weave 3D Embossing Folder. Adhere each panel to the narrower side panels of the card base.

6. Using Basic White Card Stock scraps, cut several flowers and stems from the Flowers of Home Dies.  These are some of those classics for flower arrangements on cards!

7. Repeat the die cuts with Smoky Slate and Petal Pink card stock scraps.

8. Die cut the teacup image from the Stampin’ Up! Teacup Die set using a scrap piece of Petal Pink card stock.  Stamp a partial rose image and leaves with Versamark ink and heat emboss with White embossing powder from the Stampin’ Up! Basics Embossing Powder set.

9. Stamp several images of the medium rose from the Happiness Abounds stamp set using Petal Pink Ink.  Either die cut with the Blossoming Happiness Dies or fussy cut these images.

10. Stamp several foliage images with Versamark ink on scraps of Smoky Slate cardstock and heat emboss with the white powder from the Basics Embossing Powder set.  Die cut these images – or you can fussy cut them.

11. Arrange the single rose images on each of the end flaps and adhere with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Use 2 of the foliage die cuts from the last step for a backdrop.

12. Using the Smoky Slate square from line C of the cutting guide, arrange the flowers and stems for the teacup image and glue in place.

13. Adhere the teacup panel to the Petal Pink center panel.

14. The “Happy Birthday” sentiment comes from the Happiness Abounds stamp set and is heat embossed with white powder on a strip of Vellum Card Stock.  The strip is glued in place on the center panel.

15. The final step is to add some bling!  This card has Pearl Basic Jewels – because what else would you wear to a tea party except pearls!

16. OK, only kidding…the REAL final step is to create the envelope flap to match.  Using the Tea Boutique   DSP strip, glue on the envelope flap and then cut the DSP to fit…NOW, you’re done!

My advice is to fold this card gently as you are working with each layer to be sure that all panels are placed correctly.  I folded the card shut and put a heavy book on it.  That just “trained” the card to fold flat so that it fits perfectly into an A2 envelope.

But the beauty of this Fancy Fold card is the way it expands and shouts your sentiment to the recipient!  It is truly a mantle-worthy card!

Kudos to Susan Campfield for her wonderful inspiration – and to Mary Deatherage for her take on this beautiful design!  I like to think that I am continuing the creative process with my use of the Teacup Floral bouquet.

How would you CAS this card?  With so many beautiful DSP designs out currently, those papers create their own cards with this great design!

Thanks for taking a look at this pretty birthday card!  But please don’t mention it to my daughter – as it is her birthday card because she has a great love for antique teacups…and roses.

Here is a list of the supplies that I used today:

Wow wow wow! I love this fold – but…I love how you decorated it even more! The embossing – the die cuts – the gorgeous and classic gray and pink color palette. Just stunning! 🙂

    • Susan says:

Wow, Mary – this is high praise from you – who I CAS’d, BTW! I love this fun fold because of the movement. But it is also so adaptable. I love the DSP versions…but Katie is a teacup collector and I wanted to stay with her interests for her birthday.

      Thank you so much!!

    • Susan says:

Oh Rae – it is absolutely my pleasure to be a guest designer! It is a privilege to have the opportunity to offer a design for a challenge as I get so much out of the challenges that I participate in – and there are a lot of them! Thank you so much for looking in on my design!

Susan, I saw your gorgeous card over at CC and wanted to take a closer look! The Flying Seagull card design is amazing, and then add to that how beautifully you’ve decorated it, and it’s a show stopper for sure!

    • Susan says:

Oh, Carrie – thank you so much for your very kind words!! I love this card because it is so “mantle worthy”! And it is so adaptable to many of the SU bundles – both current and retired designs! Please give it a go if you are inclined. I think that you will find that it is much easier to do for as complicated as it looks!
