For Ukraine

I know that many of us are at a loss about what is going on Ukraine.  My feelings swing between rage and horror.  I know that there is very little that one person can do – but I want to do something.  I guess there are many of us who feel that way.

One thing is, of course, to donate money to be sure that Ukrainians affected by Russian strikes have food, water, medicines, a place to rest and be safe…and I have done that.  But perhaps the other thing that might be done is to create something that attests to my care, my sorrow for what they are living through, and my prayers that ask for their peace. It is important to know that someone cares…

A card seems so little…but the request that all of us who choose to do this is for us to label them with #cardsforUkraine.  I like to think that these small gestures will serve as a testament to our caring, our concern, and our prayers.  I also like to think that many small voices will raise the rafters.

There isn’t much that needs to be demonstrated if you wish to CASE this card – and please do, if it appeals to you.  The measurements are standard for a double matted, landscape card:

PcsMeasurementsDescription
Stampin’ Up So Saffron cardstock15-1/2” x 8-1/2”Scored on the long side at 4-1/4”
Stampin’ Up! Pacific Point cardstock14” x 5-1/4”For mat on card face.
Stampin’ Up! Basic White cardstock14” x 5-1/4”For inside panel.
Stampin’ Up! Basic White Cardstock13-3/4” x 5”This is the panel for stamping and embossing.

I found that one of my favorite stamp sets – Color and Contour – offered both sentiments that are perfect for the spirit of my card.  The outer panel reads “Here for you now” with an inside sentiment that reads “And in better days ahead”.  It says everything in a few short words.

This stamp set also offers a stamp that creates “sprinkles” – or “dotage” as my friend, Ruth, from the Artful Stamper calls these designs.  The dotage was done using So Saffron ink to create the backdrop for the butterfly as well as the bottom edge of the inside card panel.

Stampin’ Up! Brilliant Wings Dies created this beautiful, stately butterfly!  I die cut it from Pacific Point cardstock and highlighted it with Wink of Stella.  Because I glued the body to the card, the wings move so gracefully when you pick up the card.

Because I prefer a rich texture to a lot of layers, I decided to dry emboss both the stamped front panel and the butterfly with the Stampin’ Up! Timeworn Type 3D embossing folder.  I assembled the card using Stamp and Seal and it was done!

I’ve entered this card into the Color Hues – Special Double Challenge.  This challenge is looking for card makers to use the colors of the Ukrainian flag to show our support for these people.  I was already looking to do something like this – but a challenge, as always, got me to focus.

Thank you so much for visiting my site today.  Please send your thoughts and prayers to the people of Ukraine.

These are the supplies that I used in today’s card.

I love the way the beautiful butterfly is lifting its wings! Hoping the fear and fighting in Ukraine will soon be lifted as well. Thanks for joining us at Color Hues!

Oh, Karen – you stated that beautifully! There was a gut feel of that as I was fussing with the wings. They need to be delicate and surprisingly strong. Thank you so much for that lovely observation!

Such a pretty card! I’m right there with you on feeling angry, horrified and wondering what to do that will actually help. A beautiful card is a great idea! 🙂

Just lovely – and expresses your feelings perfectly. We’re all sitting watching in disbelief – it’s hard to believe this is really happening again. Cards are little things – but…they’re little things that mean a lot.
